Planing by hand can be one of the most enjoyable aspects of woodworking. The quiet hiss of a well tuned plane with a razor sharp iron leaving a glass smooth surface on a piece of wood conjures up all that’s romantic in woodworking. Most of us have fallen somewhat short of this ideal in our planing efforts. This class seeks to get us back on track.
We will spend 2 days:
Discussing and analyzing planing and planes.
Building a wooden (Krenov style) smoothing plane from a Hock kit.
Sharpening
Tuning up our planes.
Making and using winding sticks.
Planing boards from rough stock to ready for finished applications (straight, flat, and smooth on 6 sides).
Learning specialty planing techniques (shooting, rabbit planing, etc.)
Participants will leave with a well tuned smoothing plane, winding sticks, and skills to sharpen and tune planes, plane wood, and build more planes.
There is a $100 materials fee per person for this class (for the plane kit) in addition to tuition.
Instructor Mike Erkkinen is a designer and builder of homes, barns, boats, masonry heaters, and furniture for the past 30 years. He is the owner of Webnash Design-Build in Monterey, MA specializing in traditionally appointed, high performance buildings.
