ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS |
Hewing & Timber Grading
Timber that comes from a local sawmill is often not graded like the lumber we see stamped in the lumberyard. Depending on the state and local building inspector, it is often left up to the owner or the sawyer to determine if each timber will meet the grade requirements (usually #2 or better) specified by the designer. This "visual grading" uses techniques outlined by the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NeLMA), and includes measuring knots, slope of grain and other defects. This is not a NeLMA-sanctioned or certification course (which often lasts many days) but is meant to give timber framers, landowners or sawyers the confidence to visually grade their own timber if certified grading is not required. Tuition: $135, includes lunch. This course runs from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. |
